"Turner Cody is a songwriter in the American tradition". It's with this aphorism that this New Yorker likes to describe himself when asked. Although this little phrase sums up the character perfectly, one could go on to say that he began his career in the legendary and nebulous "Anti-Folk" scene that gathered around the Sidewalk café local characters like Jeffrey Lewis or Adam Green and Kymia Dawson who then formed the Moldy Peaches, but also some expatriates like the Herman Düne brothers with whom he forged a solid lasting friendship that crossed the Atlantic on many occasions. After several self-produced albums and distributed in CD-Rs (in the tradition of Anti-folk), he continued making contacts on the old continent and released a compilation album containing his early works with the Brussels-based b.y_records. Many a tour followed in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and England. He played bass with Herman Dune on the tour following the release of the album “Giant". He opened for Adam Green throughout his European tour. And "Corner of My Room" one of the titles on the album "First Light" was chosen by Jacques Audiard to appear in the multi-award-winning film "A Prophet". Since then Turner Cody has released 4 more albums, and still lives in New York, with his wife and son Solomon. Cody has molded himself into an artist of great form and scope whose vision blends the old with the new, the hope-filled with the melancholic, the sacred with the profane.
Turner Cody is a singer, author, and composer in the pure American tradition.
His last album "The duke of decline" was released early September on spotify.
In Europe, "The Great Shadow" a compilation covering the years 2007-2017 will be released on October 12th on 62TV (Benelux) and Microcultures (FR).
Turner's first commercial release was on Rough Trade's 2002 "Anti-folk Vol.1" CD alongside Adam Green, Kimya Dawson, Jeffrey Lewis and others from NYC's legendary Sidewalk Café scene. Following official releases been Cody's "Quarter Century/The Great Migration" (LP 2006, Mad Monk.), "60 Seasons" (Compilation CD, 2007, by_records) "Quarter Century" (CD, 2007 Boy Scout/BBIsland). "First Light" (LP/CD 2008, Boy Scout /BBIsland/b.y_records). Before this, Cody self-released five albums: "Turner Cody" ('00), "This Springtime and Others" ('01), "Who Went West" ('01), "The Cody Choir" ('03), and "Buds of May" ('04). Also Cody self-released a book of poetry entitled "The Return of the High Priestess and other Poems" and "New Moon Prayer and other Poems of Love and Fear".
In 2004, he co-founded the club night "Hassid Meets Hipster" which united two disparate elements of Brooklyn culture for three years. Together with Tim Love Lee he's hosting the Radio Show "Thrifty, Brave & Clean" on Brooklyn Radio.
Most recently, Cody worked with video director Chris Edley (art director, MGMT) and his song "Corner Of My Room" (from “First Light” album) was picked by French director Jacques Audiard to appear in his award winning film "Un Prophète" (A Prophet - fall/winter 2009/10).
