Biographie
The WoWz are a three-piece miscellaneous band from New York City who comb (and combine) the eternal dolor of Hank Williams Sr. with the perverse humor of David Berman and the improbable harmonies of BEATLES FOR SALE.
In October 2007, after a successful month of dates throughout Europe, The WoWz returned to the United States in time to hear their music hit the big screen: The critically acclaimed Mosaic Films documentary KING CORN, for which the WoWz recorded a full-length soundtrack with producer Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown), had just kicked off its national theatrical run at New York City’s legendary Cinema Village. To celebrate, the trio returned to the studio to finish work on their third, tentatively self-titled LP, due out in the late Spring of 2008.
The tale of the WoWz stretches back to 2004, when they recorded their first LP, LONG GRAIN RIGHTS, at Balloon Heaven, an appalling dump of a Bensonhurst basement that has likewise captured the sounds of Adam Green, Herman Düne and Jeffrey Lewis. Released by NYC’s Recommended if You Like Records, LONG GRAIN RIGHTS plays like a fermented solution of powdered sugar and baking soda - a compound as addictive as picking your scalp.
Not long after, The WoWz found yet another basement that would let them descend into it. So they set up shop at Care-A-Lot Studios in Harlem and recorded the 5-song NICOTINE BUBBLEGUM EP (Luv-A-Lot Records), including a track co-written with Dave Longstreth of the Dirty Projectors. The next year saw the online-only release of their second full-length, COOL DUMP (Luv-A-Lot Records / Recommended If You Like Records), a reaming tower of questionable matter lovingly groped by some and exasperated by many.
Between recording sessions, The WoWz have played frequent shows all over New York and the rest of the Western World, hitching rides with pals like The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players (Bar None), The Brunettes (Sub Pop) and Herman Düne (Source Etc./EMI).
After their work on KING CORN, The WoWz composed music for another documentary, KANSAS VS. DARWIN, which was recently an official selection at the Kansas City Film Festival and the Tallgrass Film Festival, and the winner of the Audience Award at the Secret City Film Festival.
Through it all, The WoWz’s three LPs, two EPs and two film soundtrack finds the band at the outer reaches of quirkiness, poised to teeter upon the precipice (and prepuce) of advisable beauty until they all fall down... and perhaps only then, after we've read their wills, might we understand what that name of theirs means.
